Meeting: Building Receivers!

For the latest MSU ARC meeting, the club dusted off a few boxes of the 4SQRP (Four States QRP Group) regenerative receivers to work on putting together. Students learned basic soldering skills, and how to wind a torroid while learning about crystal controlled sets. A few followup sessions will probably be necessary, as winding torroids does take some time to do correctly if you’re not already used to the process.

Dong AD8QG, project organizer, recounted a list of what he’d learned:

  • How to wind torroid
  • I hate enameled magnet wire
  • Removing the enamel is …fun…
  • Soldering with bad solder is purgatory

Ah, yes, the fun of assembling amateur radio kits! I think perhaps we’ll order some decent solder for the next kit meeting!!!!
