Winter Field Day 2026!
With the morning temperature in Lansing reading a balmy -18 degrees F on Saturday, of course the MSU squad was attempting to fix a satellite antenna for the 30 hour event. While unsuccessful in this repair, but very successful in saving their fingers and toes, this set the stage for the tenacity that amateur radio sometimes requires, and the MSU club often delivers. Winter Field Day is all about operating in adverse and unfamiliar conditions, and Saturday January 24th 2026 certainly counted as adverse. That, however, didn’t stop the club and it’s local partners in the Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club from getting into the shack at W8SH and logging some contacts.
The room was absolutely packed for the duration of the event with CMARC members Tim W8NGT, Dan WX8MOJ, and Chris NS8Q operating from the various stations, as well as Charlie KE8ZRH, Michael KF8DQS, Dong AD8QG, Rohan KF8FBH and Jacob KF8FCH on behalf of MSU. There were even two totally new students which got to experience a whole radio-sport event including operation and logging.
Big special thanks to the Central Michigan club especially including Dan and Tim for helping to pull everything together. I love how well this event went on such short notice, and hopefully it lays the framework for future CMARC/MSU collaboration going forward.
